05. Verbs and Grammatical Framework

In Tamil, the sentence structure strictly follows Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) order. The verb is the absolute anchor of the sentence and changes form to mirror the subject (concordance) and indicate respect. Understanding the mechanics of Tamil verbs is the fastest route to fluency.

1. The Core Rule of Politeness (-nga)

In Chennai, verb roots on their own serve as informal, intimate, or occasionally harsh commands. To make any command or request socially acceptable to a stranger, colleague, or service worker, the speaker must append the suffix -nga ⟨ng-gah⟩ to the verb root. This implies the formal "you" (Neenga).

Action Verbs: The Engines of Communication

2. The Universal Tanglish Auxiliary: "Pannu"

The verb பண்ணு ⟨PUN-noo⟩ (to do) acts as a universal adapter in spoken Chennai Tamil. Speakers routinely take English nouns or verbs and attach the conjugated form of pannu to turn them into active Tamil verbs.

  • Polite command: "Google Pay பண்ணுங்க" ⟨Google Pay PUN-noong-gah⟩ (Please do Google Pay / Please pay via Google)
  • First-person past: "நான் கால் பண்ணிேனன்" ⟨NAAN call pun-nee-NAYN⟩ (I did a call / I called)

3. Pronoun and Tense Mirroring (Conjugation)

A finite verb in Tamil must match the pronoun acting upon it. While written Tamil contains complex grammatical paradigms and strict morphological categories, spoken Tamil simplifies the endings based on the subject.

Using the root பண்ணு (Pannu - Do) as an example across tenses:

Pronoun (Subject) Present Tense (-ren/-raan) Past Tense (-nnen/-nnaan) Future Tense (-ven/-vaan)
நான் (I) ⟨NAAN⟩ பண்ேறன் ⟨pun-RAYN⟩ பண்ணிேனன் ⟨pun-nee-NAYN⟩ பண்ணுேவன் ⟨pun-noo-VAYN⟩
